BMW F10 EV Conversion Project — Vision & Engineering Philosophy

Project Overview

Instead of EV conversions that are often approached as just isolated mechanical swaps, this project aims to convert a 2013 BMW F10 525d into a fully electric vehicle while preserving & enhancing the characteristics of the F10 platform.

The goal is not simply to replace the combustion drivetrain with an electric motor.

The goal is to engineer an OEM+ level EV conversion that feels cohesive, serviceable, refined, and intentionally designed as if BMW itself could have built an electric F10 platform.

The core points of this conversion:

I am doing this project as a long-term engineering and learning journey.

Planned Technical Direction

The architecture is still evolving, but the current direction includes:

Drivetrain

Battery Packaging

Battery packaging philosophy is focused on distributing weight throughout the chassis rather than concentrating mass in a single location.

Potential battery placement zones include:

Electronics & Integration

Areas of interest include:

The objective is to create a well-integrated electric vehicle platform.

Work Flow

I am aiming for mimimum vehicle downtime during the conversion process so I am creating detailed plan/mockups of everything before starting the physical work.I will have modified subfram with Tesla SDU mounted on it, battery pack craddle/mounting system, full HVAC working on bench before I will start disassembling process the vehicle.

Current work is focused on:

If you have experience, ideas, critiques, or technical insights related to EV systems, fabrication, embedded systems, vehicle integration, or automotive engineering in general, contributions and discussions are always welcome.
